Myspace.com and Kids

Interesting article about the phenom Myspace.com on Alexa's blog. Pageviews for Myspace are in the top 10 of ALL websites AND not that many people know much about it beyond hearing about it. Well here's the scoop:

I think the lesson here is not to discount the kids. They will become the prime Internet demographic in the years to come and they will determine what's hot and what's not. Just like with soda, music and movies, the marketing dollars are more interested in my kids than me... and judging from MySpace, the marketers may be right. The kids are a major force on the Web.

The lesson here is not to discount the sexual predators who, according to the statistics, number 50,000 at any one time on the Internet. Our children need to be protected and MySpace.com is now becoming a haven for kids, as well as a haven for predators. Kids may be the future demographic on the Internet, but right now they are just that; kids. I feel marketing dollars are not as important as protecting our children. MySpace.com is showing to be a threat, because it is a forum where predators can talk to our kids. Our children need to be the number one concern a far as MySpace.com is concerned. If it cannot be regulated to where predators cannot be controlled, and our children are not safe from them, then MySpace.com needs to be turned off and shut down. As a victim of teenage molestation and rape, I want no child or teen to ever experience the pain that I have.

Thanks for your thoughts! I think that you bring up a very good point about some of these social networking tools and their appeal to children.

I believe that this will become an important marketing feature in some of these sites as I know, personally, of many parents that worry about the same things as you do. I know that some friends of mine children hang out in pretty secure sites - but I don't know that much about them.

Send any links / references if you have them of places like Myspace being 'invaded' by predators - I'd like to follow up on this!
